France Coach Assistant Reveals Why Benzema Didn't Play at World Cup

France assistant coach Guy Stephan revealed the reason Karim Benzema did not play in the 2022 World Cup. According to Stephan, there are a handful of people who don't want Benzema to play in the quadrennial event.

Karim Benzema is one of the players listed in the France national team squad for the 2022 World Cup. Unfortunately, he did not participate in strengthening France. This was due to an injury he suffered ahead of the world's biggest football tournament.

As a result, Benzema did not have time to taste the minutes of playing with France. The coach, Didier Deschamps also returned Benzema to his club, Real Madrid.

However, Goal International in its report said that Benzema actually only took three days to recover from his injury. And he should be able to play for his country in Qatar.

France assistant coach Guy Stephan revealed the reason behind the decision to repatriate Benzema to Madrid. In his notebook, he mentioned that the decision to remove Benzema from the World Cup was a request from one of the team's technical staff.

"Unfortunately, Karim Benzema was injured. An examination he conducted at night confirmed that he had a thigh injury. He will leave us once in the morning and the next day return to Madrid," Guy Stephan wrote in his personal note, quoted from RMC Sports.

"It's a big blow to the French team, given its aura and talent, but we have no choice, we have to keep thinking positively and not fall into catastrophe," Stephan wrote.

Meanwhile, Antoine Griezmann and Hugo Lloris were also said to be happy with the news of Benzema being injured and having to leave the team. Both players are claimed not to want the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner's presence in the squad.

Before announcing his retirement from the national team, Benzema did not receive a call-up to compete in a number of major tournaments such as EURO 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. It is alleged that it was the result of his problems with Mathieu Valbuen who is also a former French national team.
